Spellbinder cut straight through shim

I am so frustrated. I received my Ebosser last week, and only had chance to really try it out yesterday. I cut out using a spellbinder grand square, which was fine. Then I embossed the same square, so there was an edge to it. I was mortified when the die cut straight through the shim,

I used the sandwich that was stated in the instruction booklet for embossing thin metal dies :(

why has this happened?

It sounds like you had the die wrong way up, the shim must go under the non cutting side of the die, then the die then the material you are cutting. I have done this loads of times, have lots of shapes cut out of my shim and stuck them back with duck tape, however this was accidentally putting the die the wrong way up! I can't seem to buy replacements, and don't need the rubber mat every time, I found some magnetic sheets at a show that seem to be ok instead. Oh, your cutting edge must always face upwards too.
